Access Excel VBA from a Remote Computer (especially for Mac Users)

Excel VBA does not work properly on Macs.
Occasionally (very rarely), Excel VBA also does not work properly on PCs (see Microsoft documentation here)

You have two options, if you are a Mac user:
1. Run Boot Camp and Windows (note that MacBook Air users may run into memory capacity problems.)
2. Use VDI to access a virtual Windows machine remotely. See instructions below

VDI instructions (for both Mac and PC users)

http://www.wm.edu/offices/it/services/network/virtualdesktop/index.php

NOTE: Mac users should be using the client version and not the web version for the most consistent experience.

If you need off campus access to VDI: this is now a 2 step process. In the same link as above - VDI: https://www.wm.edu/offices/it/services/network/virtualdesktop/index.php

About half way down that page you will see “*Off-Campus Access” where there are instructions for off campus access, including links to documents with screen shots. Your first step is to enroll in Duo by going to https://2f.wm.edu/. Remember you should be using the Client version (as opposed to the HTML/web-based option) for a more consistent experience.

Best Practices when using the VDI environment:
https://www.wm.edu/offices/it/documents/vmware-view-client-setup-and-usage.pdf

Please note on the last page of the document are the best practices guidelines. Read those carefully, but some of the more important items are pasted below:
  • VDI will always have some sort of lag compared to local computers.
  • Do NOT allow your computer to fall asleep or close your lid in the middle of a session. This will disconnect your VDI session and may cause you to lose work.
  • When using the full VDI client, make sure you are using the latest version.
  • Close all unnecessary applications prior to launching the VDI client for the best performance / experience.
  • IF you must use the HTML version of VDI because of specific issues with your laptop, make sure you are using Firefox. There is an issue with Blackboard when using IE to submit.
SHORTCUTS for VDI/MAC Users – it is very important that you can do keyboard shortcuts in Excel to keep up with our class work. One thing that will help is for those on a MAC to Click the APPLE LOGO, then System Preferences, then Keyboard, and then Shortcuts. You will see on the left something called Mission Control. Inside that combination a whole bunch of hot keys are checked - uncheck all of those. What is happening is this thing called Mission Control is assigning the keyboard shortcuts before they are passing to VDI. Typically this will help with allowing VDI to use those keyboard combinations the PC users use. Not all keyboard shortcuts will work, but many of the ones we will be using should now work while you use Excel through VDI.
